Funny thing is, I hang around with the horsey set, and they usually wear baseball caps. I guess with a good Resistol, or Stetson running around $200.00 these days (which no real cowboy would wear anything less than), a horse slobbering on a baseball cap is not as big of an issue. These true western horsemen will don their Resistols, or Stetsons on special occasions.
But, guys look so much better in cowboy hats.

I usually prefer baseball caps, but I'll wear a full hat (though not a cowboy hat)
when I'm working or recreating outdoors, and I'm too far from the shade.

Cowboy hats. My grandfather always wore one, & he could pull it off. Also, I look great in a cowboy hat. Not so much in a baseball cap

They cover more of you face and neck from the sun. The also keep your head cooler because the hat does not sit directly on your head.

Cowboy hats are **** on both men and women. It has character. I don't own one
