According to a new study, cat people really are different from dog people. This study reports that dog people tend to be more outgoing, and active than cat people. Makes sense right? However, it also claims that cat people tend to be more intelligent than dog people. What do you make of that?

Live Science writes, "Part of the reason for the personality differences may be related to the types of environments cat or dog people prefer, said study researcher Denise Guastello, an ********* professor of psychology at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, who presented the findings here at the annual *********** for Psychological Science meeting."

The researchers asked 600 college students about their pet preference, and also added a slew of other questions to ****** personality types. Overall, more people said they were dog lovers, citing that the companionship one gets from a dog is most important.

What do you think *********? Is there a big difference between cat people and dog people? What about those who like both equally? Is that possible? What do you consider yourself?

More importantly, are cat people smarter than dog people?

Mere choice of pet is enough to win that challenge...

With the cat you've got low maintenance, i.e. food, water & liter box. They give themselves baths, catch unwanted critters, are snuggly, more often than not can whip a dog's **** & don't embarrass the species with inability to contain emotion.

The cat knows he's loved, sleeps 18-20 hrs + & spends most of the time he's awake cleaning.

Yes, merely being drawn to cats as an acceptable pet rather than dogs shows greater intelligence on the part of cat owners.

Your intelligence has nothing to do with the fact that you are a cat or dog person. Although dogs are more intelligent and can relate to their owners better.

In my own personal experience with people I know yes. The study seems to make sense. The smartest people I know are generally cat people. I know some very smart and not-so-smart both, but the cat people win. I like cats because I'm lazy and they're less work.

The type of pet a person owns has no effect on their intelligence. What about people who have pet birds, turtles, snakes, mice, monkeys, fish, etc. Are they any dumber/smart than dog/cat owners?

Who knows if it has an effect or not? It's possible to see if there's a positive correlation between cat owners and intelligence --in some consistent quantifiable way-- vs non-cat owners (or monkey owners or yogurt-eaters for that matter). It's even possible to control for other factors and try to establish defensible evidence for a causal relationship. I'm not saying there is one, but there certainly could be.

Consider the animal itself from a frail kitten to a tiger they are magnificent.
To understand them requires a more intact mental relationship that dog's don't have the ability to comprehend.
Dogs are called dogs for a reason they're pretty dumb.

Smart people are folks who don't own pets, save money on their food and vet bills, not to mention insurance. That is not to say I don't love cats however, I used to own 2.

Being a "cat person" does not *make* the person smarter. However, smarter people tend to prefer cats. Therefore the answer is yes. "Cat people" (on average) are smarter than "dog people."

600 college students? That's a sample group? This is more evidence that departments of psychology should be scrapped.

In the wild, foxes ate whatever to survive. They may have in fact, ate feces. The wild instinct of dogs is what causes them to eat feces. There is no dry pet food in the wild. We are a civilized race, which is why we find it strange because we remember nothing of wandering like animals.

My only real issue, is with those that own Chiwawas, or Pomeranians. Anyone who could own such a mindless, yapping creature, can't possible, be that intelligent.....sorry.

Other than that, I don't really know.

What would a dog of equal size to this cat have done?

Smarter only in the fact that we don't have to deal with a pet that needs us constantly.

Why not include owners of pet birds, snakes, turtles, fish, mice, etc, etc, etc? There are many dumb pet owners. It matters not which type of animal one has for a pet.

Another useful way for women or men to measure whether their current significant other would fair as a co-parent is how committed they are in the care of their animals whether they are cat or dog people. For me a combination of cat & dog people would be ideal. It fosters both the love of just relaxing with a good book & outdoor activities. I've had both cats & dogs. But one thing that is irreplaceable is the relaxation brought on by a purring cat. Plus dogs can be your physical guard dog but cats can be your canary to the spiritual realm.
