Changes in DSM 5 - a NEW definition for BDSM.

Question

In DSM V, fifth edition, released 2012:

Sadomasochism -

"Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, and Gebhard (1953, p. 678) reported that 26% of

females and 26% of males reported a definite and/or frequent ****** response to being bitten."

"...studies which have been done show generally good psychological and social functioning compared with the general population and that sadomasochistic activity may be ********** with reductions in physiological stress and increase in relationship closeness."

"Matheson (2006) suggested that power, and not the giving and receiving of pain, was at the **** of S & M. It is important, however, to distinguish individuals practicing S & M as part of consensual ****** activity from individuals who have been arrested for such activity and are in the forensic system."

"Wright (2006) presented information on violence and discrimination against SM-identified individuals; of 1,017 SM individuals surveyed, 36% had suffered some sort of violence or harassment because of their SM practices, and 30% had been victims of job discrimination."

****** Masochism -

"The current criteria for ****** Masochism in the DSM do not apply to the vast majority of individuals who are practicing this behavior."

"There clearly are some individuals who present for treatment for ****** Masochism, where such behavior has become out of control and a source of distress or dysfunction, and the current diagnostic criteria are appropriate for these individuals."

"...there are a very small number of cases where masochistic fantasy and behavior result in severe harm or even death. These cases clearly indicate a ****** interest pattern that has become pathological. Since so little is know about this behavior, further research is indicated, and inclusion in the DSM would facilitate this."

****** Sadism -

‘‘The person has acted on these urges with a non-consenting person, or the urges, ****** fantasies, or behaviors cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.’’

"In a review of issues relevant to ********, McConaghy (1999) pointed out that the DSM-IV made the statement that the severity of ******** acts increased over time, but said that, while this may apply to serial or ******** murderers, the evidence for the usual practitioners of S & M, who presented only rarely for medical treatment, suggested that this was not the case for them."

Paraphilias do not meet the definition of a mental disorder. Conservative organizations have flagrantly misrepresented their statements and intent.

"Only individuals committing *** crimes received a diagnosis of ****** Sadism."

"Many of these studies have involved ****** homicides of one sort or another, despite the fact that these are exceedingly rare events."

"Chang and Heide (2009) reported, for instance, that in 2004 ****** homicide accounted for approximately 1.1% of 14,121 murders in the United States."

I disagree. *********** were getting beat up and fired, they shouldn't have to stop being themselves? Change their orientation?

I think judgmental people shouldn't be able to affect the lives of others, whose personal decisions in their private lives really don't affect anyone else, just my opinion.

Even apart from my basic distaste for sadism and so forth, I don't think I can relate to this reclassification at all. Sounds like they want to put out the fires, but leave the arsonist alone, so to speak. Like, the underlying ******** pathology is Within Normal Limits, but they'll address the problems it creates as they arise. Weirdness, considering the nature of that particular animal.

It sounds like APA has been tainted by political correctness like the AMA has in recent years. I guess there's a reason they go into that field in the first place.

I think, if you're I getting fired or beaten up because of your ****** practices, it's time to learn how to rein it in. Coping skills, page one. :O\
