I've always been a very good speller as far back as elementary school.
I was in a few spelling contests and won almost every one or came in 2nd place.
No kidding!

No I am ****** awful. probably as a result of having spoken a different language until I was 10 years old.
There does however seem to be a glimmer of hope. I have not needed my spell check on this reply.

Good spelling is important not only in academia but later in real life. Try to be taken seriously when you're applying for a good job if your resume is full of typos.
