Sleep is essential, but, unfortunately, that doesn't mean you can get sleep. :( At least we insomniacs can't. With me I go to sleep easily, I just can't stay asleep.

Yes, apparently the experiments done have proved that it is a symptom of sleep deprivation.

I've actually stayed up to prove this as a science experiment back in high school.

I knew someone who ***** up in a mental institution for awhile from sleep deprivation.
Personally I've had hallucinations from it, but was aware they weren't real.

Yes, probably best too. Sleep deprivation can create the illusion of all kinds of odd stuff...

And can also result in an arrest for driving impaired...

Can be as powerful an experience as ingesting a drug, depending on the length of time...

You are right, also people with mental illness or any other disease for that matter, sleep is essential for the over all health management too.

Your mind is awake and your body is tired.

I'd rather have false memories than hallucinations, though. :D Although neither is something I'd like. I am bipolar (which is part of the problem) and so mostly sleep-deprived the last few years. ***** for me and not much I can do about it. lol

Absolutely and it has been very well documented.

Sleep Deprivation and False Memories

"We examined the relationship between self-reported sleep duration and false memories and the effect of 24 hr of total sleep deprivation on susceptibility to false memories. We found that under certain conditions, sleep deprivation can increase the risk of developing false memories. Specifically, sleep deprivation increased false memories in a misinformation task when participants were sleep deprived during event encoding, but did not have a significant effect when the deprivation occurred after event encoding. These experiments are the first to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation on susceptibility to false memories, which can have dire consequences."

I certainly hope not. How could anyone say absolutely when it hasn't been proven or if it has, who by?

That is not sleep deprivation, only poor sleep habits.

I only get 4 hrs of sleep a day for the past year. No bad side effects so far.

Oh yeah. What's worse is if you get the lucid dreams. Some are so horrifying...those who had them know what I say. Get your proper sleep.

Yes! One night I only had 2 hours of sleep. So when I woke up and went to brush my teeth, I saw the bathroom door slam open and close really fast a bunch of times. I was freaking out so bad, cause I thought it was paranormal activity or something. But when I touched the door while it looked like it was moving, I felt that it was still. Then I realized that if it was slamming open and closed, it would have made noise. Even though I convinced myself I was hallucinating, that morning was the scariest moment in my life.

Fatigue equals intoxication. The mind has not been able to "clear its cache," recharge and repair the body. Fatigue impairs a person's mind and body... It has even been used as a form of torture.

One night while driving back on U.S. Hwy. 90 from a concert in New Orleans, about 100 miles from home, I got so sleepy I saw a road sign that said "I-49." Luckily I was with a date and let her drive the remaining 30 miles. We both thought it was funny and not possible. What's interesting is that years later actual signs reading "(Future Corodor) I-49" were placed along that same stretch of highway.
