We admit it, we still enjoy playing board games. Maybe it's because we were born before 1990, but to us, there's nothing like a good game of Scrabble, Taboo or Trivial Pursuit.

But apparently, these no-tech toys are making a comeback. Sales of dominoes, backgammon, chess and Jenga have more than doubled compared to this time last year, the Daily Mail reports, and simple playing cards are also hot.

In the U.K., department store John Lewis has reported a 150 percent increase in sales of classic games.

"Our sales figures suggest our customers will be spending more time at home this Christmas. Classic games are. ... a great way to get the whole family together," Phil Anniss, games buyer at John Lewis, told the Mail.

This is true -- and games also make a great ice-breaker when you're forced to socialize with people with whom you have little in common. They're also affordable and can last forever. Who's up for a game?

Board games require social interaction with other real people, right there in fromt of you, which is far better than sitting in front of a computer game on your laptop.
Monopoly being an all time favorite of mine. Do they still put all fines paid in free parking for whoever lands on it to get that money, lol.

My family when I was younger would play board games rather than watching the idiot box.

Now even in my mid-twenties I don't find it **** to wrangle up six friends for a friendly game on the weekend with a glass of wine. It's cheap and everyone usually gets a laugh at the expense of their friend's silliness. I'd say it's a win win over paying big money to go out.

Sometimes, yet certain forms of education can be really interesting. Besides grades are the key to making it in life. I posted that comment because I'm tired of all the teen posts on this site, most of them are spelled out like "whoz hotter edward or jacob?" I'm tired of it, ******** used to be a mature site.

When we realized that our 12 year old had never played Backgammon, Scrabble, Pinoccle, Crazy 8's, Monopoly, Yachtzee, Sorry, and a host of other games, we started a new tradition last year. We found out a few things. We have more fun playing games without technology. We get to know each other better, but, the best things: We don't turn on the TV or the Computer nearly as much as we used to! Why play games alone on the internet (if you're sitting by yourself, you're alone)? WHY pay a fortune for technology and get ripped off before you leave the store? Too Much for the GAME Console to begin with, Too Much for Extra Controllers, Too much for the games. Then the max that can play at a time is 4 while every one else sits around doing nothing!?! Thanks but, NO THANKS....We're regressing to our own ********* with our ******** and we're ALL loving it! We are actually listening to music more as well while we play it. A mix....nobody gets left out.

My son and his family have NetFlix so they do watch a lot of movies and some tv series - minus all the commercials. Glad you have fun with your friend, she probably loves to spend the night at your house.

My son and daughter in law are raising their ******** without tv so we all get together and play board games dominoes and cards. I must say, when we get together to play guitar hero including drums that's my favorite.

I hope so ... not just there but here in OZ too.
Can't stand all that invisible stuff in some intangible programme that most of my kids hit!
Pity too, because I was a bit of a champion at checkers and Chinese checkers and the like. In fact, I actually invented 3 board games about 30 years back.
Just love 'em.

With the cost of an evening on the town has gotten expensive anymore, Board games are the great alternative to movies or tv,
